Awards for 12/21/2024

APEX Ace Award: Brynna Burdick, Faith Heritage girls volleyball. Burdick had 15 assists and 12 digs, adding four aces and all of them important to help the Saints put up a four-set victory over Port Byron on December 17.

Atlas Fence All-Star: Stefano Magro, Mexico boys swimming. The Tigers defeated Indian River 102-62 in a head-to-head meet on December 17 led by Magro’s first-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke.

Byrne Dairy Prime Performer: Fred Velazquez, Corcoran boys basketball. With most of his 17 points coming from five 3-pointers Velazquez helped the Cougars hand 5-0 Fayetteville-Manlius its first defeat of the season 63-61 on December 19.

Energy Savers Defensive Standout: Liana Thomas, Christian Brothers Academy girls basketball. Thomas led a defense which limited previously unbeaten Westhill to just 18 points in four quarters as the Brothers pulled out a 25-18 victory on December 17.

The Image Press Icon: Gabrielle Flatt, Tully girls basketball. Between her 11 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, Flatt had plenty to do with the Black Knights battling to a 46-39 victory over Onondaga on December 16.

JKS Roofing High Achiever: Mason Farrell, Sauquoit Valley boys volleyball. Farrell began his season with five aces to go with 10 kills and three blocks which all helped Sauquoit earn a three-set sweep of Oneida on December 19.

Little York Plantation Play of the Week: Brock Frederick, South Jefferson wrestling, improving to 8-0 on the season by winning the 124-pound division and leading the Spartans to the team title in the December 20 North Country Invitational at Indian River.

M. Lemp Jewelers Rewarding Effort: Bryn Phan, Holland Patent girls wrestling. The Golden Knights were triumphant in the December 20 Cicero-North Syracuse Tournament as Phan won all her bouts on the way to first place in the 100-pound division.

Mooney Marketing Group/Bristol 7 Enterprises Major Performance: Xavier Doty, Fulton boys basketball. All Doty did in an 82-81, double-overtime victory over Jamesville-DeWitt on December 20 was set a new career mark with 39 points, and he’s still just a sophomore.

North Syracuse Lawn and Snow Notable Effort: Kaitlyn Sherwood, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill girls indoor track and field. Sherwood won the 1,500-meter run, helped in a third-place 4×400 relay and led the Red Devils to victory in the December 17 Mohawk Valley portion of the Oscar B. Jensen Memorial Relays.

Nye Automotive Mark of Excellence: Carmen Youngs, West Canada Valley girls bowling. Youngs helped West Canada stay undefeated on December 18 topping Canastota 5-0 as Youngs shot games of 173, 199 and 215 for a 585 series.

O’Hara Electric Electrifying Play: Garrett Arnold, Cicero-North Syracuse boys bowling, shooting a 300 game at the conclusion of his 715 series on December 17 at Strike-N-Spare Lanes against East Syracuse Minoa, even though the Spartans prevailed 7-0.

110 Grill Award of Excellence: Garang Garang, Bishop Grimes boys basketball. Helped by Garang’s team-high 22 points, the Cobras continued the strong start to its season December 17 routing Rochester’s Bishop Kearney 75-49.

Onondaga Flooring Outstanding Achievement: Nora Tighe, Pulaski girls indoor track and field. During the December 20 session of the Oscar B. Jensen Memorial Relays at SRC Arena Tighe swept to victories in both the shot put and the weight throw.

Purcell Paints Prime Performer: Jake Hightchew, Cazenovia ice hockey. Hightchew’s overtime goal in snowy outdoor conditions at The Farm Rink in Vestal would help the Lakers earn a memorable 5-4 victory on December 20.

Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists Student-Athlete: Abby Reynolds, Bishop Ludden girls basketball. The Gaelic Knights improved to 5-1 on December 20 defeating Phoenix 55-42 as Reynolds produced 18 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three blocks.

University Sports Shop/Manny’s Major Moment: Brennan Kline, Baldwinsville wrestling, defeating Central Square’s Sam Widrick in the 116-pound finale and moving to 14-1 on the season to give the Bees a 36-33 win and the team title at its own dual meet on December 21.

Wilkins RV Winning Player: Dan Devendorf, CNY Fusion ice hockey. Devendorf’s career-best four goals and an assist helped carry Fusion to a much-needed 6-3 victory over Livingston Manor on December 21.
