Awards for 9/21/2024

Atlas Fence All-Star: Molly Dickinson, Watertown girls swimming. Dickinson swept to individual titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle and helped in the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays to help the Cyclones to the team title at its own September 21 invitational meet.

Attilios Ace Award: Ben Resig, Fayetteville-Manlius boys volleyball. The Hornets gained some payback for losing last year’s Section III Division I final to Cicero-North Syracuse in a three-set sweep September 19 paced by Resig, who put away three aces and had a team-best 12 kills.

Byrne Dairy Prime Performer: Alex Votra, Homer football. Pounding away on the ground, Votra gained 162 yards on 36 carries and notched five touchdowns that helped the Trojans put away Camden 48-20 on September 20 for its first win of the season.

CNY Sealing and Paving Defensive Standout: Alyssa Vera, Camden field hockey. When the Blue Devils pulled out a tense 1-0 decision over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill September 20 Vera proved the anchor of her team’s defense, stopping all six of the Red Devils’ shots.

Ethan Allen Award of Excellence: Luke Snyder, Christian Brothers Academy boys golf. Shooting a three-under-par 33 at Drumlins, Snyder led the undefeated Brothers past Westhill 180-212 on September 17 to hang on to first place in the OHSL Liberty American division.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Outstanding Athlete: Faith Zylinsky, Holland Patent girls soccer. When the Golden Knights beat Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 6-2 on September 17 Zylinsky put on quite a shot notching four goals and assisting on her team’s other two tallies.

The Image Press Icon: Ian Thompson, Skaneateles boys soccer. Picking up three more goals for his third hat trick of the season, Thompson ran his season total to 14 and helped the Lakers push past Cortland 5-0 on September 19. 

Little York Plantation Play of the Week: Molly Myatt, Oneida girls cross country, crossing the finish line in 19:21.3 less than a second ahead of South Jefferson’s Ellie Roberts to win a dramatic Small School race during the September 21 Baldwinsville Invitational.

M. Lemp Jewelers Rewarding Effort: Kyle Wehrlin, Chittenango football. With his 23 carries for 169 yards and three touchdowns including the fourth-quarter game-winner, Wehrlin did enough to push the Bears past Oneida 34-27 in a September 27 thriller.

Mooney Marketing Group/Bristol 7 Enterprises Major Performance: Bailey Frost, Fulton girls volleyball. It’s doubtful the Red Dragons edge Central Square in five sets on September 18 if Frost isn’t putting together an effort which includes 17 kills, 12 digs, five aces and three blocks.

North Syracuse Lawn and Snow Notable Effort: Daniel Dunn, Oswego boys cross country. With his time of 17 minutes 49 seconds, Dunn took individual honors and helped the Buccaneers defeat East Syracuse Minoa 25-34 in a head-to-head meet on September 18 .

Nye Automotive Mark of Excellence:  Cameryn Brundage, Port Byron/Union Springs field hockey. Brundage nailed two goals in the Panthers’ 4-0 shutout of Homer on September 17 and, a day later, her two goals and two assists carried her side past Cortland 6-0.

O’Hara Electric Electrifying Play: Sophia Montana and Samara Giorgi, Whitesboro girls tennis, notching the decisive points in doubles in three sets over Sage Hanifin and Peyton Hoang to help Whitesboro win a Tri-Valley league showdown with Oneida 4-3 on September 20.

Onondaga Flooring Outstanding Achievement: Sloane Raymond, Cicero-North Syracuse girls soccer. Just an eighth-grader, Raymond got two goals in the Northstars’ 5-1 romp over Liverpool on September 16 and scored twice more later in the week in an 8-1 win over Athens (Pennsylvania).

Purcell Paints Prime Performer: Kamal Cisson-Ali, Utica Proctor football. The Raiders were victorious 28-14 over Rome Free Academy in the latest edition of their long-time rivalry on September 21 as Cisson-Ali scored all four of Proctor’s touchdowns while accumulating 160 total yards.

Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists Student-Athlete: Emily Kane, Cooperstown girls swimming. Kane swam to top times in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle each of which helped the Hawkeyes pull away and defeat Adirondack 88-49 on September 19.

University Sports Shop/Manny’s Major Moment: Madison Scranton, New Hartford gymnastics, scoring a rare perfect 10 on the uneven bars in the Spartans’ season opening meet September 14 against Rome Free Academy, which ultimately helped the Spartans prevail 144.65-96.90/

Upstate Urology Upstart: Alexa Sleight, Living Word Academy girls volleyball. Sleight picked up 26 assists, tacking on five kills and three aces, all of which were important to the Lions in a four-set victory over Altmar-Parish-Williamstown on September 19.

Wilkins RV Winning Player: Brian Simmons, West Genesee football. After just catch in his first two games, Simmons caught three touchdown passes in the Wildcats’ game against Baldwinsville on September 20, propelling his side to a 40-7 victory.
