Awards for 3/11/2023

AFLAC Amazing Athlete: Grayson Gall, New Hartford girls gymnastics. Gall won both the balance beam and uneven bars and helped Section III to the team title in the March 5 NYSPHSAA championships in suburban Buffalo.

Byrne Dairy Prime Performer: Rory Nelen, Cooperstown girls basketball. The Hawkeyes beat Weedsport 64-59 for the Section III Class C championship March 4 as Nelen amassed 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Empower Federal Credit Union Rewarding Effort: Shawn Mayes, Westhill boys basketball. When the Warriors beat Marcellus 62-54 for the Section III Class B championship March 5, Mayes had 18 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Ethan Allen Award of Excellence: Kyle Evanchak, West Genesee ice hockey. Evanchak had key goals in each of the Wildcats’ wins over Baldwinsville in the Section III Division I final and then over Ithaca in the regional finals.

Fitness Forum/Ultimate Goal/Sports 481 Fabulous Effort: Dustin Swartwood, Auburn boys indoor track and field. Swartwood finished second in both the shot put and weight throw in the March 4 NYSPHSAA championships at Staten Island.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Outstanding Athlete: Valerossa Gambitta, Cortland girls basketball. The Purple Tigers beat Westhill 47-41 for the Section III Class B championship March 4 as Gambitta had 15 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Mooney Marketing Group/Bristol 7 Enterprises Major Performance: A’briyah Cunningham, Liverpool girls basketball. With 20 points off the bench, Cunningham helped the Warriors beat Cicero-North Syracuse 57-50 for the Section III Class AA championship March 4.

Nye Automotive Mark of Excellence: Michael Blaskey, Dolgeville boys basketball. Blaskey had 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists as the Blue Devils topped Mount Markham 86-67 March 5 to win the Section III Class C championship.

Purcell Paints Prime Performer: Bruce Wingate, Liverpool boys basketball. Wingate had most of his 19 points in a decisive mid-game surge to push the Warriors past West Genesee 66-53 in the March 5 Section III Class AA final.

Revitalize! CNY Rewarding Performance: Ravan Marsell, Indian River girls basketball. Marsell picked up 20 points to lead the Warriors past Franklin Academy 46-30 in the Class A regional playoffs on March 8.

Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists Student-Athlete: Nick Giuliano, Sauquoit Valley boys volleyball. Sauquoit lost in five sets to Catskill in the March 4 Class C regional final despite Giuiliano recording 49 assists.

University Sports Shop/Manny’s Major Moment: Kate Putman, Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field, repeating her 1,500-meter championship during the March 5 NYSPHSAA championships at Staten Island.

Upstate Urology Upstart: Andrew Gaglione, Skaneateles ice hockey. Gaglione’s goals in each of the first two periods helped the Lakers defeat Webster Schroeder 4-0 in the March 4 Division II regional final at Allyn Arena.

U.S. Army Athlete of the Week: Misha Kabunov, Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA boys swimming. Kabunov’s sixth-place finish in the 500 freestyle was the best for any Section III swimmer in the March 3-4 NYSPHSAA championships at Ithaca College.

Wilkins RV Winning Player: Zero Draft Defensive Standout: Ryan Paul, Oneida boys volleyball. When Oneida defeated Ichabod Crane in four sets in the March 4 Class B regional final, Paul amassed 34 digs, an average of more than eight digs per set.
