Awards for 9/14/2024

Atlas Fence All-Star: Jacob Haeflin, Waterville football. Haeflin’s 14 carries for 100 yards led to three touchdowns and helped Waterville roll past New York Mills 41-18 in its eight-man football season opener on September 12.

Attilios Ace Award: Isabella Rodriguez, Fulton girls volleyball. When the Red Dragons swept Mexico on September 9, Rodriguez was sensational on several fronts, serving up seven aces while also leading the team with 14 assists and adding four kills.

Byrne Dairy Prime Performer: Meghan Groshans, Fayetteville-Manlius girls swimming. Just a freshman, Groshans claimed titles in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle, helping to push the Hornets past Cicero-North Syracuse 96-78 on September 10.

CNY Sealing and Paving Defensive Standout: Marquan Saddler, Christian Brothers Academy football. From a sack on the first play from scrimmage, Saddler led the Brothers’ defense to a second consecutive shutout on September 13 when it blanked Cicero-North Syracuse 27-0.

Ethan Allen Award of Excellence: Gracen Grimm, Clinton field hockey. When the Comets took apart Sherburne-Earlville by a 12-0 margin on September 12, Grimm led the charge, netting four goals after scoring once two days earlier in a 2-1 win over Canastota.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Outstanding Athlete: Lana Moore, Whitesboro girls cross country. With a fifth-place finish in a time of 20 minutes, 57.9 seconds, Moore led Whitesboro to the team title in the New Hartford Invitational on September 14.

The Image Press Icon: Jack Ruddy, Bishop Ludden boys soccer. The Gaelic Knights won a tense 1-0 battle over reigning sectional Class C champion Fabius-Pompey on September 10, with Ruddy netting the game’s only goal during the first half.

Little York Plantation Play of the Week: Kyra Lynch, West Genesee girls soccer, heading home the game-winning goal early in the first overtime period to complete the Wildcats’ comeback from a 2-1 deficit and defeat Cicero-North Syracuse 3-2 on September 10.

M. Lemp Jewelers Rewarding Effort: Lauren Sincebaugh, Auburn girls tennis. Sincebaugh’s three-set victory over Rhiannon Cobb was one of three different three-set wins that helped the Maroons fight past East Syracuse Minoa 4-3 on September 11.

Mooney Marketing Group/Bristol 7 Enterprises Major Performance: Danny Young, Westhill boys golf. All that Young did to keep the Warriors undefeated was shoot a season-best 32 against Phoenix September 11 and put up a 34 in a win over Cortland two days later.

North Syracuse Lawn and Snow Notable Effort: Emelyn Bailllie, Holland Patent field hockey. After a tumultuous off-season Baillie, a freshman, put up one goal and one assist which helped the Golden Knights open 2024 with an impressive 3-0 shutout of Camden on September 11.

Nye Automotive Mark of Excellence:  Cameron Cleveland, Hamilton girls volleyball. A tough five-set battle saw the Emerald Knights hold off Cato-Meridian September 12 in large part due to Cleveland, who brought power with 14 kills and defense earning 20 digs.

O’Hara Electric Electrifying Play: John Sindoni, Liverpool football, throwing a 99-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Rivera in the first quarter of the Warriors’ game at Baldwinsville on September 13, Rivera later adding a defensive and special teams touchdown in a 55-6 victory. Onondaga Flooring Outstanding Achievement: Gavin Karwoski, Chittenango boys soccer. In an astonishing performance, Karwoski netted all six of his team’s goals as the Bears rolled past Phoenix 6-1 on September 12 to improve its overall record to 3-0-1.

Purcell Paints Prime Performer: Tai Nortz, Lowville girls soccer. Through nine games, Nortz has already picked up nine goals, netting three of them for her second hat trick of the season September 11 when Lowville defeated Watertown IHC by a score of 7-0.

Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists Student-Athlete: Donovan Randall, East Syracuse Minoa boys volleyball. The Spartans’ 3-0 start was keyed by a four-set victory over Fayetteville-Manlius on September 9 where Randall, feeding it to a strong front line, finished the night with 43 assists.

University Sports Shop/Manny’s Major Moment: David Pierce, Onondaga football, throwing a touchdown pass to Jesse Recor with two seconds left to push the Tigers past Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 18-12 and give new head coach Josiah Jones his first win at the helm.

Upstate Urology Upstart: Alyssa Collins, Frankfort-Schuyler girls soccer. The Maroon Knights blasted past Dolgeville 5-0 on September 12 and Collins had much to do with it, putting in three of her team’s goals and finishing with a hat trick.

Wilkins RV Winning Player: Ella McCarthy, New Hartford girls swimming. Going 57.77 seconds in the 100 freestyle and 1:07.37 in the 100 backstroke, McCarthy led the Spartans to a 96-56 victory over Utica Proctor in the team’s September 12 season opener.
