Awards for 2/24/2024

AFLAC Amazing Athlete: David Goodfriend, New York Mills boys basketball. Goodfriend had 25 points in the Marauders’ first-round Section III Class D playoff win over Remsen and 13 in a win over Copenhagen in the quarterfinal round.

Atlas Fence All-Star:  Ayla Pas’cal, Skaneateles girls basketball. Setting a new career mark with 33 points, Pas’cal helped the Lakers oust Syracuse Academy of Sciencd 54-44 in the February 20 opening round of the Section III Class B playoffs.

Attilios Ace Award: Brayden Huntley, Central Valley Academy boys volleyball. With his 26 assists, Huntley helped the Thunder defeat Oneida in straight sets on February 22 and improve to 15-4 on the season.

Byrne Dairy Prime Performer: Grace Breeze, Auburn girls basketball. Getting all of her 18 points from six 3-pointers, Breeze helped the Maroons rally past Christian Brothers Academy 56-52 in the February 22 Section III Class AA quarterfinals.

CNY Sealing and Paving Defensive Standout: Luke Jackson, Hamilton boys basketball. In the Emerald Knights’ Section III Class C playoffs wins over Syracuse OnTech and Frankfort-Schuyler, Jackson keyed both defensive efforts by making a combined 14 steals.

Ethan Allen Award of Excellence: Elise Courto, New Hartford girls volleyball. When the Spartans defeated Rome Free Academy in four sets February 17 for the Section III Class A winter championship, Courto dominated with 23 kills at the net and 18 digs on defense.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Outstanding Athlete: Sadie Withers, Jamesville-DeWitt girls basketball. Earning a career mark with 19 points including five 3-pointers, Withers led the Red Rams past Oneida 57-41 in the February 23 Section III Class A quarterfinal.

The Image Press Icon: Tavian Camper, Copenhagen wrestling. Camper earned the 152-pound state Division II championship February 24 in Albany, defeating Tioga’s Caden Bellis 4-3 in a hard-fought final bout to claim his first state crown.

M. Lemp Jewelers Rewarding Effort: Andrew Juliano, Holland Patent. Just a sophomore, Juliano took home the state Division II championship at 101 pounds after defeating Newfane’s Jakob Lucinski in the February 24 championship bout in Albany.

Mooney Marketing Group/Bristol 7 Enterprises Major Performance: Chase Mearon, Cicero-North Syracuse ice hockey. Mearon, with two goals all season, got two more, including the game-winner as the Northstars beat CNY Fusion 3-1 in the February 19 Section III Division I quarterfinals.

North Syracuse Lawn and Snow Notable Effort: Tega Igho, Clinton boys basketball. When the Comets went on the road and defeated Lowville 62-55 in the February 23 Section III Class B quarterfinals, Igho gained 29 points, nearly half his team’s output.

Nye Automotive Mark of Excellence: Mallory Brown, Weedsport girls basketball. Between her 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists, Brown pushed Weedsport past Cooperstown 49-36 in the February 23 Section III Class C quarterfinals.

Purcell Paints Prime Performer: Ben Lovell, CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt ice hockey. All that Lovell did in the Brothers’ 2-1 overtime win at New Hartford in the Section III Division II semifinal on February 21 was stop 48 of the 49 shots he faced.

Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists Student-Athlete: Kaelyn Boliver, Beaver River girls volleyball. the Beavers claimed an epic five-set win over Mount Markham February 17 to win the Section III Class C championship as Boliver earned a triple-double of 16 kills, 12 assists and 16 digs.

University Sports Shop/Manny’s Major Moment: Abby Bombard, Watertown IHC girls basketball, surpassing  1,000 career points as the Cavaliers defeated Belleville-Henderson 52-36 on February 24 in the Section III Class D quarterfinals.

Upstate Urology Upstart: Messiah Holliman, OnTech boys basketball. Holliman had 23 points and eight assists as the Grey Wolves beat LaFayette 69-47 on February 20 in the Class C opening round for the program’s first-ever Section III playoff victory.

U.S. Army Athlete of the Week: Allyson St. Germain, Cincinnatus girls volleyball. Between her 15 kills and 25 digs, St. Germain keyed the Lions’ four-set victory over Fabius-Pompey February 17 that secured the Section III Class D winter championship.

Wilkins RV Winning Player: Gavin Aceto, Whitesboro ice hockey. When Whitesboro knocked off Oswego 4-3 in the February 19 Section III Division II second-round game, Aceto carried the attack, scoring twice and adding an assist.
