Here is the NYE Automotive Group Top 10 for the week of October 10…

  1. Back on the last Saturday of September an epic game between ancient rivals Rome Free Academy and Utica Proctor went down to the wire as a last-minute touchdown pass from Mark Barone to Tyshawn Smith gave the Black Knights a 27-26 win, its first over the Raiders in more than a decade. It improved RFA to 3-1 though it was humbled six days later in a 49-0 defeat to Liverpool…
  2. Everything in Class B football changed on the last Friday of September when VVS fended off a late comeback attempt by New Hartford to win 31-28. Now it’s the Red Devils that everyone is chasing, a fact reinforced by an impressive 30-6 win at previously unbeaten Chittenango a week later as Holland Patent is 5-0 in Class C putting that mark on the line Friday night against 5-0 Solvay…
  3. With their undefeated marks Dolgeville is still atop the state Class D football rankings and Waterville is the same in eight-man football. But while the Blue Devils play Herkimer on Saturday a showdown at high noon beckons between 5-0 Waterville and 5-0 Cooperstown, who has allowed just 42 points all season trying to stop a Hawks offense which put up 68 against New York Mills a week ago..
  4. New Hartford remains the big story in area girls soccer, having climbed to 13-0 and to the top of the state Class A rankings. The Spartans scored 23 combined goals in its last two games against Utica Proctor and Whitesboro and junior Raiyah Patterson has proven unstoppable earning 28 goals and 16 assists while teammate Gabby Jerome has contributed 18 goals to this attack…
  5. There’s also plenty of girls soccer contenders in the small-school ranks. In Class C Frankforth-Schuyler and Sauquoit Valley both are in the state top 10 heading for the top sectional playoff seeds and West Canada is also state-ranked, while in Class D Hamilton rolls along in the no. 9 state ranking even though it’s looking up both at top-ranked Cincinnatus and Copenhagen in the no. 5 spot…
  6. No one in area boys soccer is making bigger noise than Utica Proctor, following up last year’s sectional final run by starting 11-1-2 and climbing to no. 5 in the state Class AAA rankings right behind Baldwinsville in the top spot – and the Raiders and Bees face each other on Monday offering a possible sectional finals preview and a rematch of the 2025 final which B’ville claimed….
  7. Though still the area’s domiannt field hockey team, Little Falls finally fell from the unbeaten ranks on Wednesday though it came against a Class A team as the Mounties were shut out 2-0 by Liverpool. No doubt that Rome Free Academy, still unbeaten against Section III competition, is paying attention as the Black Knights might find itself challenged by the Legends come playoff time..
  8. Cross country teams continue crowded league schedules and big local events including last weekend’s Whitesboro Invitational where the hosts edged New Hartford by two points 43-45 for the girls title but the Spartans won the boys title as individual races went to Cooperstown’s Evelyn Rhodes on the girls side and Clinton’s Ben Morford holding off Whitesboro’s Ryan Kunkel in the boys race..
  9. In girls tennis Oneida is once again a Section III champion. The Express moved to 16-0 shutting out Mexico 7-0 in the quarterfinals, withstanding a challenge from Chittenango 5-2 in the semifinals and finally topping upstart Marcellus 6-1 in the finals. Now Oneida will face Class D champion Cazenovia, just as it did in 2025, hoping to beat the Lakers again and return to the state team tournament…
  10. Finally a great tribute was made to a great coach last week. Whitesboro named its football stadium in honor of Tom Schoen, who won an astonishing 283 games over the course of his career, most in Section III history. A huge crowd honored Schoen and then watched Whitesboro claim a 50-40 thriller over Carthage as it contends again in Class A and has a key game this Friday against 4-1 F-M…
