Awards for 5/8/21

AFLAC Amazing Athlete: Gracie Giannettino, Auburn girls lacrosse. When the Maroons rolled past reigning sectional Class C champion Jamesville-DeWttt 20-7 on May 4, Giannettino led a deep, well-balanced attack by amassing four goals and four assists.

Atlas Fence All-Star: Christina Jackson, Weedsport softball. Throwing a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts against just two walks allowed, Jackson led the Warriors to a 6-0 victory over the Cato-Meridian Blue Devils on May 7.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Male Athlete of the Week: Gabe O’Donnell, Homer boys track and field. O’Donnell swept to titles in the 400 hurdles, 110 high hurdles and high jump all to help the Trojans take out Christian Brothers Academy 87-27 on May 5.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Female Athlete of the Week: Angie Cirasuolo, Whitesboro softball. When the Warriors earned a 32-0 victory over Utica Proctor on May 4, Cirasuolo starred at the plate with a home run, double and two singles and finished with seven RBIs.

Mirbeau Inn and Spa Megastar: Jonah Shearer, Beaver River baseball. Shearer began his season pitching a no-hitter against the Watertown Cyclones on May 1, striking out 16 and overcoming four walks as the Beavers rolled to a 10-0 victory.

Nagle Turf Winning Moment: Declan Landers, Christian Brothers Academy boys lacrosse, netting the goal with 55 seconds left that helped the Brothers knock off the reigning state Class D champion LaFayette Lancers 13-12 on May 6. Coach of the Week: Zac Darrow, Hamilton softball. Once again, the Emerald Knights are off to a terrific start, winning its first four games and scoring 71 combined runs in them, the only close call a 7-6 win over Waterville on May 6.

Syracuse Fitness Store Standout: Essex Glowaki, Jamesville-DeWitt boys tennis. As the Red Rams roared out to a 2-0 start with 7-0 sweeps over Auburn and Fulton, Glowaki did not allow a game in any of the four sets he played in first singles.

Syracuse Orthopedic Surgeons Student-Athlete: Mateo Ripa, New Hartford boys lacrosse. The Spartans were dominant in its 17-2 victory over the Rome Free Academy Black Knights on May 6 with Ripa doing his part thanks to four goals and three assists.

Syracuse Sauna King Superstar: Danielle Filapello, Cicero-North Syracuse softball. Filapello’s second-inning grand slam, double and five RBIs helped the Northstars overcome an early 4-0 deficit and defeat the rival Liverpool Warriors on May 1 at the Gillette Road complex.

Tuscarora Golf Club Top Golfer: Shawn Colella, Marcellus boys. The Mustangs stayed undefeated by handling the Weedsports Warriors 209-285on May 7 at Meadowbrook Golf Course, led again by Colella, who broke par by posting a one-under-par 34.

U.S. Army Male Athlete: Joe Dunham, Bishop Ludden baseball. Just an eighth-grader, Dunham threw a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and drove in both runs to beat Port Byron 2-0 May 3 and, three days later, drove in the winning runs in the seventh inning of a 5-4 victory over Bishop Grimes.

U.S. Army Female Athlete: Victoria Payne, Oswego girls track and field. Payne’s trio of victories in the 400-meter dash, 200-meter dash and long jump were all important to the Buccaneers in a 78-58 victory over the Central Square Redhawks on May 5.
