Awards for 5/1/21

AFLAC Amazing Athlete: Noah Hammon, Rome Free Academy boys lacrosse. When the Black Knights toppled the Central Square Redhawks 16-12 on April 30, Hammon was largely responsible for it thanks to his career-best total of eight goals.

Atlas Fence All-Star: Emma Cecile, Syracuse girls lacrosse. Cecile’s three goals and one assist were vital to the combined Syracuse City team as it won an 8-7 decision over the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Red Devils on April 30.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Male Athlete of the Week: Austin Calkins, Hannibal boys track and field. When the Warriors defeated the Jordan-Elbridge Eagles 90-30 on April 28, Calkins pulled off a clean sweep of the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs.

Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Female Athlete of the Week: Sarah Kilburn, Watertown girls swimming and lacrosse. Kilburn went from Section III Class B titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle to the lacrosse field and four goals and four assists in a season-opening 14-7 win over Indian River.

Mirbeau Inn and Spa Megastar: Arianna Matthews, Skaneateles girls swimming. Matthews, just an eighth-grader, was victorious in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle to help the Lakers win the virtual Section III Class C championship meet.

Nagle Turf Winning Moment: Halen Saroney, West Genesee girls lacrosse, earning the go-ahead goal with 20 seconds left to help the Wildcats complete a late-game comeback to beat the Liverpool Warriors 13-11 on April 29 at LHS Stadium. Coach of the Week: Tim Gates, Westmoreland/Oriskany football. Gates led this combined Westmoreland/Oriskany side to a perfect 5-0 record this season that was capped April 25 by a 29-15 victory over the Waterville Indians.

Syracuse Fitness Store Standout: Alexis Durocher, Fabius-Pompey softball. Durocher brought the power with a home run, triple and seven RBIs, all of it was important to the Falcons as it claimed its season opener 13-9 over the Homer Trojans on April 27.

Syracuse Orthopedic Surgeons Student-Athlete: Carleigh Patterson, Fulton girls lacrosse. Patterson picked up six goals and one assist, leading a potent Red Raiders attack that was dominant in a 22-2 victory over the Mexico Tigers on April 29.

Syracuse Sauna King Superstar: Rowan Marsell, Indian River football. In just three quarters, Marsell picked up an astonishing 548 yards on 24 carries and scored nine touchdowns in the Warriors’ wild 86-48 win over the East Syracuse Minoa Spartans.

Tuscarora Golf Club Top Golfer: Emily Barnes, Central Square girls. In the first SCAC Empire Division join match on April 29 at Tecumesh Golf Course, Barnes was, by far, the top individual, her nine-hole score of 37 eight shots ahead of the field.

U.S. Army Male Athlete: Bruno Kinsey, Bishop Grimes football. Kinsey completed 12 of 18 passes for 289 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Cobras in eight-man football to a 48-38 victory over the Morrisvlle-Eaton Warriors on April 24.

U.S. Army Female Athlete: Kaitlyn Sovocool, Homer girls lacrosse. All that Sovocool did in the Trojans’ 21-3 victory over the Jordan-Elbridge Eagles on April 29 was put together the first double-digit goal performance of the season in Section III, earning 11 goals overall.
