Awards for 12/18/2021

AFLAC Amazing Athlete: Carleigh Szalach, Cazenovia girls basketball. Putting in 24 points, Szalach accounted for more than half her team’s production during the Lakers’ 46-36 victory over the Hannibal Warriors on December 13.


The Amish Group Master Builder: Ben Wittman, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill boys basketball. The Red Devils beat the rival Oneida Indians 72-58 on December 14 as Wittman gained 14 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, five assists and three blocks.


Atlas Fence All-Star: Bill Mills, Mexico boys swimming. With his victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, Mills pushed the Tigers to a 105-78 victory over the visiting Baldwinsville Bees on December 16.


E.J. Electric Electrifying Performance: John Sheridan, CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt ice hockey. The Brothers beat the Fayetteville-Manlius Hornets 8-1 on December 17 at State Fair Coliseum as Sheridan picked up four goals for the winning side.


Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Male Athlete of the Week: Jack Lamson, Jordan-Elbridge wrestling. Lamson was victorious at 132 pounds, beating Grand Island’s Miles Coughlin in the final, during the December 11 Phoenix Round Robin.


Holbrook Heating and Air Conditioning Female Athlete of the Week: Tamiah Washington, Utica Proctor girls indoor track and field. Washington won both the 300-meter dash and long jump as part of the Mohawk Valley ITA meet on December 17 at Utica College.


Mirbeau Inn and Spa Megastar: Rocky El, East Syracuse Minoa boys indoor track and field. El set a school record in the triple jump and also prevailed in the long jump during the December 18 George Constantino Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena.


Nagle Turf Winning Moment: Cade Leombrone, Liverpool wrestling, pinning Baldwinsville’s Korben Haney at 285 pounds to get the clinching points as the Warriors battled past the rival Baldwinsville Bees 39-34 on December 15.


Purcell Paints Hometown Hockey Hero: Jameson Bucktooth, Syracuse. Putting up two goals and three assists, Bucktooth was the spark for the Cougars as it pounded the Shenendehowa Plainsmen 11-3 on December 11 at Meachem Rink.


Shute’s Water Systems Star Performance: Kolton Kelley, Camden wrestling. Winning all five of his bouts at 138 pounds, Kelley was named his team’s outstanding wrestler as the Blue Devils won the General Brown Duals on December 11.


Syracuse Fitness Store Standout: Will Smith, West Canada Valley boys basketball. Smith picked up 19 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals to help the Indians win a 64-51 battle over the Herkimer Magicians on December 15.


Syracuse Orthopedic Surgeons Student-Athlete: Kyla Palmer, Skaneateles girls indoor track and field. Palmer set the school record in the 300-meter dash with a time of 42.22 seconds during the December 18 George Constantino Invitational at SRC Arena.


Syracuse Sauna King Superstar: DeSean Strachan, Auburn boys basketball. In the Maroons’ 76-73 overtime victory over the Fulton Red Raiders 76-73 on December 17, Strachan produced 25 points, but also got five rebounds, five assists and two steals.


U.S. Army Male Athlete: Mateo Ripa, New Hartford boys swimming. The Spartans got past the Fulton Red Raiders 98-85 led in large part by Ripa, who swept to first-place finishes in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and helped in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.


U.S. Army Female Athlete: Alexis Kennedy, Rome Free Academy girls volleyball. Dominant at the net, Kennedy gained 10 kills and six blocks as the Black Knights got a four-set victory over the Oneida Indians on December 15.


Zero Draft Defensive Standout: Cianna Papineau, LaFayette girls basketball. Papineau picked up 12 steals and five rebounds, to go with 22 points and seven assists, as the Lancers handled the Fabius-Pompey Falcons 56-24 on December 13.
